Why showing up matters

“I was part of my high school basketball team during my freshman year. I loved basketball and was so proud to have made the team. We only won 3 games all season, but the impact was enduring and not quantifiable by points on the board.
I learned how to be part of a team, with each person bringing unique skills and weaknesses. I learned the discipline of showing up to practice even knowing that some parts would be hard. I showed up on the days when I was tired because I made a commitment to myself and my teammates were counting on me. I learned to value physical activity and I’ve identified as an athlete ever since.
Playing sports became part of my identity, and a source of pride and confidence that had positive implications in other parts of my life. Playing sports has lifelong benefits and every child should have the opportunity to feel part of a team.”
