Transgender youth deserve the chance to participate in school sports — to learn the lessons sports teach, on and off the field. But now, that right has been threatened.

In the past few years, 27 states have passed bans to stop trans youth from playing on teams that match their gender identity. Now, the Supreme Court has upheld these discriminatory bans — a heartbreaking outcome for transgender youth across the country.

Regardless of what the Court ruled, transgender youth have the right to belong. And no court ruling can erase transgender people — or the love, support, and belonging they have in their families, teams, and communities.

History shows what’s at stake when we shut people out through bans: what politicians push is not always right, and many past exclusions have since been corrected and overturned. Because this isn’t just about who gets to play school sports. It’s yet another step toward more discrimination and harm against the entire LGBTQ+ community. That’s why we must protect rights — not just for some of us, but for all of us. Rights that are hard won, fought for over generations.
